Plumbing Questions to Ask Before Buying a Home in Texas

Quick answerBefore buying a Texas home, ask what the supply and drain pipes are made of, how old the water heater is, what the static water pressure is, whether the sewer line has been scoped, and whether there's any history of slab leaks or foundation repair. Get answers during the option period, while you can still negotiate.

The five plumbing questions

  • What are the pipes? Polybutylene, galvanized and older cast iron change the math.
  • How old is the water heater? Tanks commonly last 8–12 years in Central Texas hard water.
  • What's the water pressure? Above 80 psi requires a pressure-reducing valve.
  • Has the sewer been scoped? Especially in older homes with trees.
  • Any slab leaks or foundation repair? Ask for reports and any hydrostatic test results.

Why a plumbing assessment helps

General inspections cover plumbing briefly. A plumbing-only home assessment goes deeper and gives typical repair costs you can use in negotiation.
