Where pipes froze
- Attic supply lines, common in slab homes repiped overhead
- Exterior walls, especially on north faces
- Garages, crawlspaces and unheated utility rooms
- Hose bibbs, irrigation backflow preventers and pool equipment
- Exposed well pumps and pressure tanks in the Hill Country
Before the freeze
- Find, label and test the main shutoff; replace it if it doesn't close
- Insulate exposed pipes and attic runs near vents and eaves
- Cover hose bibbs and backflow preventers; drain irrigation
- Open cabinet doors on exterior walls and drip vulnerable faucets
- Know how to shut off the water heater's fuel or power if the water is off
If a pipe bursts
Shut the main, open a faucet to relieve pressure, turn off the water heater, document everything with photos for insurance, and get a licensed plumber. If the repair quote or insurance scope seems off, we provide claims and dispute support.
